    Fish are like flies are like frogs: Conservation of dorsal‐ventral patterning mechanisms.Scott A. Holley & Edwin L. Ferguson - 1997 - Bioessays 19 (4):281-284.
Genetic analysis of Drosophila has shown that a morphogenetic gradient of the Transforming Growth Factor‐β family member dpp patterns the embryonic dorsalventral axis. Molecular and embryological evidence from Xenopus has strongly suggested a similar role for Bmp‐4, the dpp homolog, in patterning the dorsalventral axis of chordates. A recent report has now identified mutations in two genes, dino and swirl, that disrupt dorsal‐ventral patterning in the zebrafish Danio rerio(1). Characterization of these mutations parallels findings from Drosophila, thus establishing a genetic (...)

  11. Further Reflections on Existential Ontology and Psychotherapy.Edwin L. Hersch - 2015 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 22 (2):129-132.
I wish to thank both Dr. Eagle and Dr. Thompson for their thoughtful and thought-provoking commentaries on my paper. I address some of the concerns they brought up in this response. When I began to write this paper, my first thoughts were to the effect of “How does one write a relatively brief article about a topic on which I’ve already devoted a rather lengthy book?” What do I include? And what do I leave out? Although the latter of these (...)

    The Identity‐Location Binding Problem.Piers D. L. Howe & Adam Ferguson - 2015 - Cognitive Science 39 (7):1622-1645.
The binding problem is fundamental to visual perception. It is the problem of associating an object's visual properties with itself and not with some other object. The problem is made particular difficult because different properties of an object, such as its color, shape, size, and motion, are often processed independently, sometimes in different cortical areas. The results of these separate analyses have to be combined before the object can be seen as a single coherent entity as opposed to a collection (...)

Ethical Challenges of Advances in Vaccine Delivery Technologies.Arthur L. Caplan, Kyle Ferguson & Anne Williamson - 2024 - Hastings Center Report 54 (1):13-15.
Strategies to address misinformation and hesitancy about vaccines, including the fear of needles, and to overcome obstacles to access, such as the refrigeration that some vaccines demand, strongly suggest the need to develop new vaccine delivery technologies. But, given widespread distrust surrounding vaccination, these new technologies must be introduced to the public with the utmost transparency, care, and community involvement. Two emerging technologies, one a skin‐patch vaccine and the other a companion dye and detector, provide excellent examples of greatly improved (...)

Philosophically-informed psychotherapy and the concept of transference.Edwin L. Hersch - 2006 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 26 (1-2):221-234.
The theoretical and philosophical assumptions underlying our psychological practices greatly affect the ways that clinicians in the mental health field go about their work and to some extent how successful at it they are. This paper attempts to illustrate this by describing how a careful and systematic look at the underlying philosophical presuppositions surrounding the concept of transference yielded clear clinical benefits to my own practice of psychotherapy. More specifically, by contrasting the philosophical paradigm implied in the classical definitions of (...)

Enhancing Animals is “Still Genetics”: Perspectives of Genome Scientists and Policymakers on Animal and Human Enhancement.Rebecca L. Walker, Zachary Ferguson, Logan Mitchell & Margaret Waltz - forthcoming - AJOB Empirical Bioethics.
Background: Nonhuman animals are regularly enhanced genomically with CRISPR and other gene editing tools as scientists aim at better models for biomedical research, more tractable agricultural animals, or animals that are otherwise well suited to a defined purpose. This study investigated how genome editors and policymakers perceived ethical or policy benefits and drawbacks for animal enhancement and how perceived benefits and drawbacks are alike, or differ from, those for human genome editing. Methods: We identified scientists through relevant literature searches as (...)

Injustice in american liberal democracy: Foundations for a Rawlsian critique. [REVIEW]Edwin L. Goff - 1984 - Journal of Value Inquiry 18 (2):145-154.
Rawls stipulates that nonideal theory must include theories of punishment and compensatory justice, as well as a justification for the forms of opposition to unjust regimes, from civil disobedience and conscientious refusal to militant resistance, rebellion and revolution. (TOJ, p. 8) Given the Kantian interpretation of nonideal theory we now can see that each of its parts must be constructed to contribute to the teaching of justice. The preferred theory of moral development enables us to understand how persons come to (...)
